Farmall A Temperature Gage

I am piecing together a Farmall A 1941. I just purchased a temperature gage. It has the 2 hole bracket on it. Where does the gage mount on the sheet metal. Any pictures would help.
Thanks,
Tim

The A doesnt have one, theres no place to hook them up from factory. You could can put one by drill and taping a coolant pipe if you like, but there was none from factory.

None standard on the gas engines (was an option), the sender on the ones for the kerosene/distillate engines fit into the water inlet elbow, there may be other places to mount. I suggest you look at the www.caseih.com parts section. The elbow etc is NLA, but it may give you some ideas. You will probably have to fabricate something. Gene Bender, if he sees this post will be able to give an exact location.

Is this the bracket you have?

You will find an unused tapped hole on the front of the gov housing where it will mount. Now do you have the plug in the lower outlet for the sender. If you dont have the place with a plug in the hole you can remove the housing and have it drilled and tapped or i can sell ya one.

The tractor I have looks to be a distillate model but I don't have the separate gasoline tank. The carb was ID'd as a duel fuel when I rebuilt it(adjustable main jet) and the original hood had an extra hole for the gas tank cap. The lower coolant return housing off the engine is already drilled and tapped with a broken off brass fitting and soldered piece of copper pipe. It looks as though there was one originally but not sure whatever happened to it. I will take a peek tonight to find those open tapped holes on the governor case.
Thanks,
Tim

Where did you get that gauge? I've been advertising for one for my '39 for years. I'll send you a picture of the guage and its installation instructions out of the original Owner's Manual Special Attachments booklet as soon as I find out how to insert it. Another option---send me an e-mail and I can reply to it.

Here's the photo I mentioned in my previous post.

Here is a picture of my gage and lead. Somehow the lead doesn't look long enough to go from the top of the governor housing to the water elbow on the lower left of the tractor.

Do you have the dimensions for drilling & tapping the housing? Also, do you have or know where I can get a gauge?

Vic

I sent you an e-mail where to get the guage but dont expect it to read temp as is is located on the outlet going back into the radiator and by then the water has cooled pretty good so the guage wont move unless you are using the engine real hard for a long time.

www.nnalert.com has them nnalert pg 73 on their new cataloge 28 also have the brackets 15.21. Wait until you get the guage to see which pipe bushing you will need usually a 1/2x3/8 hex bushing is needed but some guages are different in the sender end. The 2ft lead is plenty for an A

Those engines will not usually get warm enough to make the guage move unless you have the shutters. The top of the area around the head gets warm as warm water rises. You could drill and tap the upper housing where the fan assy bolts. A fitting could be placed there for the sender. A temp guage with dial and probe inserted in the coolant with the radiator cap off will usually read around 170 when the engine is warm like after mowing.

Ok
I snapped some pictures of my current set up.
Step #1 Below Mounting

Step #2 Fish Sensor Lead behind Fan and governor arm. How do you fix lead as to not get caught in governor arm or pulleys?

Step #3 Connect sensor to return housing from block. How delicate is the sensor lead due to excessive bending and forming?

Thanks for the Help !!

That looks like it. What I can't remember is whetehr the original lead was routed over the governor (i.e.) behind the fan bracket, or down and under. If there's any extra length on the lead from the sending unit, I think I'd favor the upper routing to avoid it fouling in the belt. Also not sure, but there may be a blind hole somehere on the front of the head or on the sides near the front where you could put a clip to secure the lead.

It's been awhile (6 months) but The temp cord runs along the top of the timing cover with hangers using the t-cover bolts. It is routed nice and clean. The rh light wire I beleive used the same retainers.
