I have an IH 460 Industrial w/3120 backhoe attachment. Top support bracket for swing mechanism has badly worn splines. Shaft also worn but not as bad. Local shops can't broach new plate & water jet shop says can't make plate to fit worn shaft. Can only program machine with standard spline engineering specs. Worldwide search by Kohmatsu dealer found one part in France - period. Any ideas? Am thinking about trying to convert to fixed rack and moving pinion from fixed pinion with moving rack. Other choice is fabricate to use 2 single action cylinders like Case does now. Both a lot of work. If not repaired, I will have a tractor/loader and a lot of scrap metal. Purchased for landscaping projects - 25% done. Still works but every swing adds more wear and failure imminent.

When asking for a upper suport, be sure and ask about a later model too. they were all the same , newer ones were a little thicker and did'nt seme to wear as much. These were on the newer series tractors 2500, 250, 260 series.

Top support is 2.25 inches thick. Anything thicker might cause a problem of clearance for relief line. Pinch bolt also fits in groove in side of shaft making positioning & timing somewhat critical. Someone told me you could turn shaft around to change how splines mate but you would have to cut a new groove for pinch bolt if you did this. Not as simple as it sounds and doesn't truly address the wear issue. I have been referred to another shop that thinks they can help me out. It's about 125 miles away and I plan to deliver it this week to see what they can do. I will be happy to report on my success - if I have any.

I would try Bates Corp. In Indiana. that arrangment looks like somebody had a "better idea".I think I would be looking at converting it to the 2 cylinder setup. My dad's Pippin unit on his 240 has that and it's held up pretty good for almost 50 years.Let us know what you end up doing. I'll try to put a link in to Bates. Good luck, Ed

You probably already tried the tractor junk yards for used parts - there are quite a few 3120's around.

I'm not familiar with this type of swing mechanism but I am a machinist. If the shaft can be removed perhaps the splines could be recut to clean up the wear and make them uniform and a known size. Then a new plate could be made. My experience with water jet parts is that the splines wouldn't be straight enough. Some water jet cuts are better than others but even a few thousanths taper in the splines would lead to fast wear. I think wire edm would be a better way to go. If you can give the programmer a diameter and spline shape (the reason for recutting the shaft first) they should be able to match them up perfectly. None of this is going to be cheap but you probably already know that. Good luck, Ed

Thanks for the responses. I drilled holes through plate into shaft for 5/8x14 dog point set screws. Worked awhile then pinch bolt snapped & sets sheared. Maybe sets caused outward force but tried to control depth to avoid this. Talked to one shop about edm but many $. Trying to avoid shaft removal. No leaks now & prefer not taking apart until last resort. Was advised of wide tolerances of water jet & not best option. Didn't try many boneyards. Any suggestions of some I can try? Not familiar with many of them. Whole tractor has been a money pit already but I'm sure many of you know the feeling of not wanting to let the tractor win.

I know this is not the best fix but I've seen this done. Driil holes where the shaft and the clock come together and drive wedge pins in holes.
