Head gasket for IH 574 - how easy to do?

My buddy has a leaky head gasket on his IH 574. I have done head gaskets on Ford 8N and Allis B, but how easy or not is it on this tractor? Your help appreciated, thank you.

David,
A head gasket is a head gasket; the procedures are the same. Get a manual, have the head and block checked for flatness, follow the torque specs in the manual and blown head gaskets are cured.

Hi, Is it leaking to the outside? Or is there coolant getting in the crankcase oil? If it is coolant in the oil, I would suspect leaky "O" rings on the bottom of the sleves. This should be a German D-239 Diesel engine and leaky "O" rings were a common problem especially if engine had been overheated at sometime. The "O" rings will leak in cold weather.

It's a simple job. Follow the manual and take your time. I applied copper top paste to a new one recently and now coolant no longer leaks into engine.

I would leave as many parts as possible bolted to the head (ie manifolds, etc) when removing to save time.

Take a few pictures and make a few notes when doing this. They may come in handy when doing the reassembly. Hal
