F-20 Rear main seal

How hard is it to replace the rear main seal? I guess I am more worried about getting the big nut off that holds the fly wheel and then the fly wheel off, and getting it back tight enough! How long should the job take?

Get ready for a chore. The nut should come off with a set of plumbing pliers. You will need a heavy (and I mean heavy) duty puller to pull the flywheel off the shaft. It laughed at my harbor freight puller. The seal is a felt seal is straight forward swap. Rice Equip will have the seal. The big pain is putting it back together. You have to install a dowel at the same time that flywheel is slid back in place. It took 3 of us to re-install the flywheel. You will want to heat the flywheel on the bbq grill and then two of you will push the 100+ lb flywheel on the crankshaft. The third wheel will install the dowel at the same time you are pushing the flywheel on. Good luck.

Thank's Not the answer I was wanting to hear, had all ready heard it was a chore. May just let it leak a while.

Flat rate for removing and reinstalling a flywheel on a F-20 is 5.5 hours. Add another half hour to replace the seal once the flywheel is off. That time is for experienced mechanics. If you can do it in twice that time you are doing well.

I don't know what year my flat rate/repair manual was published but the suggested cost for the 5.5 hours for R&R the flywheel is $13.75. Good luck in finding a $2.50 and hour shop rate today!
