H Governor Oddity

Sorry for the poor picture, but if you look at the upper right corner of the governor, you will see a nut and a threaded insert. Inside this insert, there is a spring that seems to act as a dampening device at high speed rpms. I was putting a governor together for my H engine the other day, and of the four I had to work with, three did not have this feature...the casting was just smooth and no insert at all. Has anyone ever seen this before, and if you have, what is the purpose? I decided to use this one, since it had great weights in it already and the rest of it was in good shape. The other picture is the engine as it sits waiting to be put into action. I am restoring my Grandfather's H, and I have had to use two other parts tractors to get the things I needed....there is still a lot to go. By the way, if you ever re-build a front bolster, there are more than one design internally! Been there today and finished up after combining two into one! Mark

It is what you say it is, it controls surging, Some H's and M's do some dont. By the Supers they seem to drop that and just use a soft plug there.
