Farmall M Belt Pulley

I have a Farmall M tractor with a belt pulley drive but no pulley. I have seen different sizes of pulleys and also all steel pulleys and paper pulleys. Can some of you Farmall guys out there please tell me what the correct diameter pulley should go on this tractor and what is the advantage or disadvantage of steel or paper? Thanks for any response!

You mean the flat belt drive on the side of the tractor? We sawed a lot wood when I was a kid with the paper drive on a buzz saw. The tractor had the paper and the saw had the steel. I couldn't say one end worked better than the other.

The one on the tractor was around 11 or 12 inches. The one on the saw was an eight inch.

IH sold several size pulleys for M tractors depending what was being run from the belt. Belt drives and pulleys were considered a attachment, so I don't yhink any one size was considered standard. Common was the 11 x 7.5 and a 12 x 8.5 and 13 x 8.5 were sold. The only advantage with iron was holding up better if left out in the weather. Fiber, paper pulleys griped belts better. IH was getting fiber pulleys for M size tractors until in 1951 or 52 when something happened to the supply. Think the company went out of buisness or quit making pulleys. IH then went to selling the iron ones for the next few years. Don't know if IH considered the iron ones less effective or they cost more, but for some reason IH considered the iron ones to be sold for emergency use on H, M size tractors when fiber pulleys were not available.
