Hello, Janicholson and ScottyHOMEy

Do you two remember my posting this past week? You both replied about my electrical switch problem on my Farmall A. It was a discharge, pinning the ammeter to minus 20.
I think my field resistor IS toast. My question is, where do you suggest I get a new resistor? Will I have to improvise by using a more modern form of a resistor? Also, I understand that the power rating of a resistor has to be taken into account. The generator field resistor is 2.8 ohms and the dimmer resistor is 5 ohms, I believe. Thanks, Tom in Iowa City

Glad you got her straightened out, Tom.

Try external_link, go to new parts and then electrical. If you drill down from there to the third or fourth page, you'll find both the light and field resistors.

Tom, you or somebody else might want to set me straight, if I'm out in left field here, but the way I see it, the field resistor, comes into play when lights are off and on low charge, but in other situations, the field terminal of the generator is switched directly to ground in order to provide maximum generator output. So, I guess, I'm wondering how this resistor is going to fix your problem? You might want to invest in a $2 pair or 3 of Radio Shack resistors to experiment before tossing $20 for the one that actually fits on the back of the switch.
Just wondering out loud?

JMOR,thanks for that advice. I was wondering about that as well. I think the primary issue is to find out what happened or what is happening first, if possible. I've got enough friends who are electrically competent, and one, Gene Bender, who knows the Farmall, to help me see what is going on. Then, like you say, or, like you say, first use a cheap substitute resistor, and see if things can be made to work. My problem is that I feel very challenged electrically. I sure appreciate the help of you and others on this board!!! Tom in Iowa City.

As I think about this issue, I am pretty convinced in my head that there is power getting to the resistor from the light circuit. There is only one wire connected to this section of the switch, and it comes from the F terminal of the GEN. Make sure that is the case. JimN
