I apologize for the non tractor question but it takes farmers to answer farm questions. I am wondering if anyone living around western New York knows of any slaughter houses around doing custom work. I am just west of Rochester. I'd like to get a cow going for beef but over the past several years regulations have killed the small slaughter houses. They are now few and far between. A buddy of mine and myself have done our own pigs but cows are just too much work.

I just ground a whole cow, this old girl was a fence climbing SOB.
I have a Cabelas 1 hp grinder with the bagger attachment. This cow was 1400 pounds. We took her to a slaughterhouse that killed her and laid the quarters in the back of the truck wrapped in bed sheets. They did it for 35 dollars, which I thought it was a steal. We hung the quarters in a shed that was sealed good, and was cold. It took me 8 hours to bone her out. I did have some help with trimming and grinding. We ran her twice through the grinder and into the 1 and 2 pound bags. Around here they charge between .30 and .40 cents per pound hanging weight to cut and wrap. Too bad I don’t live closer I would do it for a share of the meat.
My opinion is I say go for it. Ya it is some work but it is the kind of work our fathers and grandfathers did. Doing it will make you feel good about the work and the meat you will get. It is hard but it is good work. Ron
