It runs! :)

Hello all, I've been working on a 1944 W-4 for a local farmer this week. It is reported to have been the first tractor in the village I live in and hasn't been running since the 60's. It is far and away the most original tractor I've ever seen (right down to the battery with the exposed connectors for the plates on the top). After an ignition tune up and a carb rebuild and an oil change (which included pulling the oil pan to clean out the 3/8" of putty like sludge) it was time to jury rig a gas tank and see what happens. After about 20 or so swings on the crank it roared to life and proceed to empty fourty years of detritus from the exhaust. Now, time for the real work to begin. It's got no hours on it but it's dirty and I imagine that once we start using it all the seals will start to leak. Nothing like the sound of the first start! Sam

Sam: Does it belong to Allison Killen? His dad took me in to look at that tractor many years ago. It was in great shape when I saw it around 196?. If I recall he has both steel and rubber for rear tires. I bet that tractor never set out over night.

It now belongs to Charles (I believe they're cousins?). It is still in great shape (compared to most of them around here anyway) and has supposedly never set out. Both the steel and original rubber are still with it (along with all the implements it was new with). It's still going to be a lot of work to try and keep it as original as possible and to save what I can. Maybe the biggest challenge will be the rear tires which are original Firestones, the rims have rotted (calcium) but I'm hoping the tires will survive remounting. Sam
