Little Genius Plow question

I have a 3 bottom #8 that I would like to take a bottom off. Will i run into balance problems making it into a two? And also I have some NOS Plow Chief bottoms I was thinking about using. Anybody ever done this?

Cowman,

If the land wheel is in front of the 3rd bottom, you have a plow that's convertable to 2-bottom. If the land wheel is outside the 3rd bottom, you have a plow that you can add a 4th bottom to.

I've got a #60 3-bottom plow with the land wheel outside the 3rd bottom and I'm in a similar situation. The question is, will the plow tip over forward if I was to remove the rear bottom and move the tail wheel up to the 2nd bottom. The frame pivot for the land axle is right even with the middle of the 2nd bottom.

Even fully raised, though, the land wheel's axle is still well ahead of the second bottom. I'm inclined to give it a try here, but I still have to decide which plow to try it on: The good looking plow that's all worn out, or the rusty plow that's in good shape...

Howard, I don't know for sure whether it will cause you a problem to take one bottom off, but I think you can do it if you change the plow hitch to put the center of draft between the remaining bottoms.

I know of more than one #8 plow that has had the original bottoms replaced with Super Chief bottoms. The frog of the Super Chief will bolt right up. As far as I know a Plow Chief frog will too. I've done it on my single bottom #8, works very well that way.

I'll have to go look but I'm pretty sure the wheel is inside. I was just out there but I was busy getting a cow in. My feet hurt.
Thanks.

i have a set up manual for #8 plows at a glace through it show 3 bottom turned to 4 and some other set ups but shows nothing about turning 3 into 2 and by looking at the blow ups it cant be done unless it was already an add on to start, also for referance if you can by chance turn it into 2 bottom the hitch is shown about in line with the land side plow point and i know this to be true because i have 2 bottom pulled by a Farmall H, line of draft is not true center it is center of pull thats the trick you need to offset due to the push too one side,of course there are many hitch set ups depending on tractor ,ground condition ,ect.. my book come from jensales its a reprint but very helpfull they are still advalible but pricy ,good luck

Howard: What Kirsch is talking about regarding the No.60, there are 4 models; 60-2bottom, a 60 3 bottom reducable to 2, a 60L 3 bottom which can't be reduced but it can be turned into a 60 4 bottom.

I don't know as the same applies to a No.8. Problems with the 60L is all three beams come all the way forward to the hitch. The right rockshaft crosses all 3 beams. The big kicker is right rockshaft crosses directly above shin of first bottom, left roackshaft crosses directly above shin of second bottom. Rockshafts are much further ahead on 2-3 bottom plow, probably close to 15". If you try to make a 2 bottom out of the L frame you have to move those rockshafts and front wheels forward, or the plow will nose dive. I asked kirsch if his plow beams are drilled for moving shafts forward, he has not answered that particular question.

Sorry Hugh, I must've missed that question.

The answer is no, they're not drilled to move the rockshafts forward.

Frankly, it looks like it'll be close. The land axle is just ahead of the 2nd bottom, so there's two bottoms and the tail wheel counterbalancing the hitch. I think the only way to really be sure is to try it.

The only question left is which plow? The rusty plow that's in good shape, or the worn out plow that looks relatively decent... Both have good iron on them, but the worn out plow's moving parts are in pretty sad shape, and someone ran the points way too long and wore off the frogs.

Like mkirsch said, if you have an add-on third bottom, it can be converted to two. Just make sure you have the arm on the land axle to attach the tail wheel lift link (it should be there). The lift link is moved from near the land wheel to between the beams. The balance is not affected. Plow Chiefs can be used. Points are expensive. My primary plow was a 3-14 #8 that I removed a bottom from. I used Plow Chiefs but now I am experimenting with Super Chief X-series bottoms.
