53 SH disc brakes

Hi Guys,

I am working on getting the brakes on my SH functional. The previous owner just dropped the 3 point box blade to stop, not exactly mr. maintenance.

The "pinion, bull, and brake shaft" is pretty worn in both places that the disc ride. How much is acceptable? Is that part still available new?

The "brake drum" and the "retainer" that the inner disc brakes against both have a pretty good ridge around the machined braking surface. How much is acceptable? It would seem that I would need to get both surfaces turned and then have the mating surface of the brake drum/retainer milled to get proper tolerances. If that is the case, what would the proper clearance dimensions be?

Thanks in advance for your help.

This is the method I used when I reconditioned the disc brakes on my 300F. To make these brakes like new you have 4 different surfaces to turn. The outer housing, the two actuaters and the bull pinion bearing retainer. The total amount removed on these 4 surfaces needs to be removed from mating surface of the brake housing. If this is the first time anything has been turned then usually you can measure the indentation wear surfaces to get a rough idea how much wear deteration there is. You almost have to reassemble the brakes and check the amount of travel in the actuaters. When you have the brakes adjust up (not to tight) you want the two actuating links that attach to the operating rod yoke to be as straight as possible this will give you more leverage when actuating the brake. I hope I have not totally confused you.
