making new sleeves for MD

Has anybody here made new sleeves on a lathe?

I have access to a tool and die shop. Looking to save some $$ on this rebuild. Main bearings are needed also and those are not cheap.

I"m still looking for a source on new piston rings.

Doesn't Alderson Tractor claim to have rings available for nearly anything? That noted, I'm not sure what sleeves or stock you are starting out with, but I'm not positive if there is savings in making your own; if there are enough interested parties I'd bet one of the custom sleeve shops could do a batch fairly reasonable [OTOH, probably still over $500 for a set?], but I think Alderson had some F-30 / 10-20 sleeves made a while back and might have some insight there if you call them about the rings.

OH, I envy you guys with access to a mill and lathe! At $40 to $60 an hour I seldom can experiment having parts or tools made.

Good luck!

I'll be buying main bearings from them soon.

I've got 1 cracked sleeve and 1 with rust pitts.

These MD's are not cheap to rebuild, I haven't touched the head or injection pump yet!

You are going to want to start with the right stock. There are a lot of additives that they put in the metal for sleeves, etc. The manufacturers have been experimenting for decades on what is the best metal combination to use. In the long run how much are you really going to save?

Here is a thought, factory sleeves were 3.875" bore, if you can find some used sleeves that size, you can have them bored to 4".
