Wrong starter on Super A???

I recently bought what I think is a Super A. The starter pull rod was not hooked up and it appears that the starter may be the wrong starter, the saddle switch is mounted on the front portion of the case, so the button faces forward. Is it possible to turn the case around so that the switch would be on the rear with the button facing rearward?

The early A's and B's had the starter rod as you describe. If you do have a SA, you might have a starter moved over from an A or B.

Does the tractor have hydraulics? Also look at the serial number on the inside of the left seat support. The plate will tell you the model. Sounds like you probably have an A.

It DOES have hydraulics, it also still has a magneto (not hooked up) although it has been switched to a coil. Did Super A's have an ignition coil or magneto? I always thought A's had magnetos and Super A's had a coil. Is that correct? The starter rod is the type with a loop on the operator end (like on my 100) that you PULL. I once had an A and the starter rod had a right angle on the operator end and you PUSHED it to run the starter. The seat bracket has been replaced with a homemade thing (so, no "A" ID plate) and there is NOT an ID plate on the left side of the engine where it is on my 100. What do I have? And can the starter case be turned around??? Thanks

Paul: I've never tried this, but why not remove the starter switch, see if it will go on starter the other way. I know the terminal on top of starter looks as though it could have a switch button from either direction to suit the application. The A, B, C, SA, SC, 100, 200, etc., all have the same basic starter, just the switch is push on A and B, pull of others. Could be the same switch, I've never looked very seriously at the A or B.

A good number of SA had mag ignition. Distributor ign never really took of until the early 50s. Farmers will be farmers, some were and are reluctant to change. My dad had a mag on the W4 until he cranked it all day once in the late 40s. Next day a distributor was installed.

In 1955 I tried to persuade him to buy a diesel rather than the 300. After he used the 300 a few years, discovered what a drinking problem the 300 had, it wasn't hard to get him to go diesel with the 560. Man has always done those silly things.

Paul,

You can get an age for your tractor by looking at casting codes. Look for a format XX-YY-A, two numbers, two more numbers, and a letter. That's the day the castings were made.

It could be as old as a 1948, when Super As started rolling off the line. Those would still have magneto ignition.

They never installed a magneto with an external coil. What you have is a broken magneto that was barnyard engineered into a makeshift distributor by adding an external coil. It's a pretty common fix because it was a lot cheaper and quicker than getting the magneto repaired.

The first couple years of Super A all had a magneto. You have an A starter. The switch is the same on A and Super A, but is mounted the other way around. To accomplish this, both the lug and the screw holes in the starter housing were relocated. So you can't just turn the switch around. More obviosly, you can't turn the starter housing around either.
