Restoring Serial Number Plate

The plates on my H and Super C are well worn. Is there a way to restor the black background. I haven"t seen a method in any of my books. Thanks.

There's quite a bit more raised on those plates than readily appears to the eye -- all the lettering except the numbers that are obviously stamped in.

I had good luck with the only one I've tried. I stripped the whole thing, masked off the open spots where the model, ser # and rpms are stamped, as well as around it (so as not to have to remove it from the tractor, or seat support in my case). Then I shot the whole thing with a few thin coats of black lacquer from a rattle can. Followed that with a light wet sanding with 2000 grit to expose the raised lettering. Took a couple of tries to get it right to where I then threw a coat of clear lacquer over it and removed the masking. Turned out pretty nice.

Black and silver. This is one part you just have to bite the bullet on and order a repro from OEM. I did that for the SMTA. Then I taped the old original matching number scoundrel to the inside of the toolbox.
The look of the new one, new rivits, perfect in every way draws the eye to it from the whole side of the tractor.
