International F-358 loader

I had this loader installed on my IH 544 the loader will go up and down just fine but when I tilt the bucket all the way up it falls right back down. I was thinking it was air in the lines but I have bled the lines two or three times and it has not gotten any better. I even switched the lines to the tractor without any change. Is it air in the lines or is it something to do with the seals in the cylinders?

Most likely you have a piston seal problem.

Double-acting cylinders generally self-bleed just by exercising them to the extent of the travels.

You might be able to hear what's going on my careful (safe) use of your ear next to one or more lines while taking extreme caution to avoid impending pinch points...while that might point out a single bad cylinder seal...IMHO it is worth your time to disassemble and rebuild them both at the same time on the bench.

Only caveat is if the rod chroming is badly eaten up and pitted...in which case I'd recommend sourcing some new cylinders.

Thanks Matt how hard is it to replace the seals? The cyliders themselves are fine. Can this be done by a backyerd mechanic?

I'm not trying to be a smart-azz; I'm really, really not.

Are you sure you're not splitting your remotes?

Kinda sounds like you're using two outs for the lift and two ins for the tilt.

Allan has a point.

If it were bad seals in the cylinders, the loader would fall back down all by itself. Tilting the bucket would not cause the loader to drop.

On a large-frame tractors of that era, the two hydraulic levers shared a common pivot. One lever had a tube, and the other had a rod that ran through the inside of the tube. If a tractor sat around long enough these could get sticky and moving one lever would also cause the other to move with it, activating both remotes. You wouldn't notice it raising the loader, but tilting the bucket would also cause the loader to drop.

I don't know how the valves are arranged on a 544, though.
