Farmall MD Precups

After removing the injectors for rebuild do the precups need to removed for cleaning or can they be sufficently cleaned still in the head? Whats the best way to get them out? Thanks for the HELP!

I've had the dubvious pleasure of working on too many of those IH gas-diesel heads over the past 40 years and removing those precups can be a bummer. I suggest that if they are oriented in the head correctly, i.e. the outlet is pointing in the correct direction, leave them there.

All too often I've found that someone had installed them incorrectly which can cause some piston damage in the long term because the flame front isn't directed accross the combustion chamber properly.

There isn't much cleaning to do, or necessary, other that what a long stem wire brush on a drill can do.

According to the manual there is a puller to get them out, but I have not seen one. I don't know even how it works as there doesn't seem to be anything to grip to pull them out. I soaked mine in penetrating oil and used a brass rod to drive them out from the combustion chamber side. However, that may not be the best way as I did damage one and ended up getting another one from a salvage yard. Roger
