Don't let the way it's put together fool ya, as gravity really has nothing to do with it.

The "lift pump" is built right into the injection pump.

Engine in the picture is running....notice the fuel can located down BELOW the pump.

Allan is 100% correct. All the rotary injection pumps have their own feed pumps built into the back. In most cases the little pump serves two funcions. Allows fuel to be lifted up to 12 feet, and also operates the fuel-advance.

I've seen 706s with Roosamaster/Stanadyne and also CAVs. CAV was built under license by Stanadyne (they paid to copy it overseas). Same with the rotary German Bosch pumps and Diesel Kiki clones.
