Could someone please explain the difference between a I 4 and a W 4. I think the I 4 is geared different but that is all I know. Thank you.

The -4 Series are not my Forte, but I can tell you that they were geared different. There were more W-4's produced than I-4's. One unique difference, although this was an option, was the heavy-duty front axel.
Some I-4's lacked the PTO and/or the belt pully.

Yes - 3rd and 4th gears are different (faster) on the I-4. Other differences from the W4 include a different (heavier) front axle, larger front wheels/tires and a foot-operated accelerator.

Also a "heavy duty" version of the the I4 could be spec'd with an even heavier rear axle, a spring suspended front axle, hydraulic brakes, several different wheels and a few other options I cannot immediately recall.

W-4 was a McCormick or McCormick Deering whereas the I-4 was a International. Different fenders, different platform, different gearing, different wheel and tire sizes both standard and optional, foot accelerator standard on I-4, heavy duty front axle optional on I-4, hydraulic brakes optional on I-4, pintle hitch standard on I-4, regular drawbar optional on I-4, spark arrestor optional on I-4, optional lights in different position, I-4 was available orange or red at no cost, other colors slightly extra, W-4 was red only at no cost but any other colors slightly extra. IHC would paint ANY tractor ANY color the customer wanted for a slight extra fee. May be a few more minor differences I can"t think or right now, but those are most.

The main differences I have seen are the pintle hitch, and rear fenders/platform. My I4 has the same front and rear wheel/tire/hub as my buddys W-4. Also has the same drawbar, just mounted slightly different, but I know the drawbar was added later, and has the same front end.

I'm restoring mine now and something that hasn't been mentioned yet is that the throttle linkage is different on an I-4 vs. a w-4 or H. Found that out when we were pulled the parts off a w-4 parts tractor to put on the I.
