12 volt conversion

I have installed a mitsubish alternator on my 1948 "M". It was benched checked OK after I had removed it from a wrecked car. It has the Mitsubishi symbol but no placard containing model numbers. Can I use Farmers Bobs diagram #5 when wiring this tractor. I would have to go to the starter switch that is installed on the "M". Currently, the tractor is running on a 12 volt battery using a ballast resister and a distributor and I am trying to add a good working charging system.

Wayne - Whether that diagram will work depends on the alternator you've got.

If it's internally regulated and has separate, external control/idiot light and voltage sense terminals, the diagram SHOULD work. However if the alternator's externally regulated, or if is internally regulated but wired differently from the Delco 10SI the diagram will not work for your setup.

Sorry I can't tell you more...

I believe there are mitsubishi wiring pics and instructions in the archives. (search for box). If it has two spade terminals it is very likely the same setup. JimN

Most likely, the alternator is a three (3) wire set up which can be converted to one (1) wire. There are spade connections labeled S & L and a BAT post connection. The L spade is for the idiot light and can be disregarded. Use a jumper wire from the S spade to the BAT post and you are good to go.

Run a wire from the BAT Terminal to the positive cable on the Starter switch.

Be sure to switch the polarity of the battery to Negative ground to avoid damaging the Alternator.
Consequently, you need to switch the wires on the coil, if you are using a coil. You can eliminate the balast by using a 12-volt coil.

Use a plastic covered connection when you connect the jumper wire from the S spade

Just remember that if you don't use the idiot light or some exciter circuit, you will have to give the alt. a lot of RPM's to start her charging. I recommend the light.
