Cub Cadet Kohler Engine

I own a 16 HP Cub Cadet that I believe was manufactured around 1982. It has a 16HP Kohler K-341 engine. The engine is getting pretty tired, no more power and burning quite a bit of oil. I would like to order a complete new Kohler engine for it but I'm afraid of what exactly to order. There are many applications for this engine and I want to make sure I get the right one that will fit right in without hassle or modifications.

The serial number on the current (and tired) engine is: 8331495 and the serial number on the Cub Cadet is: 2050670U622974.

Would order directly from a Kohler dealer be advisable or should I go to a Cub Cadet dealer?

Any help on getting a new engine would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Pierre

I don't think a new engine is available, those old K series engines are tough, rebuild your old one,but do it right'bore the block, turn crank, new piston assy.,new rod,do the valves.Do not use old rod over, even if crank does not need turning.Scott

I did my 14 hp for about $250.00 last year piece of cake and yes do get a new rod that ussually the first thing to fail.

I've heard you can buy them completely rebuilt, but when I pressed for details no one seems to know where you can get them.

You can get a replacement engine from these guys:

Several people have had good luck with the Honda 20 hp engines.

Here is a detailed thread on how to do it:

Or you can buy a rebuild kit. The one I got off Ebay was OK - except one crank seal wouldn't fit. Even with having to order a second seal it was about 1/3 the cost of buying an OEM kit.
