Farmall super H valve tappets

I recently bought a 53 super H at a consignment auction. When I heard it run before I bought it, I heard alot of top engine noise. Then once I got it home, I took off the valve cover and your not going to belive this. I got the feeler guage out and started checking the gap. I could see that they were alot over .017 so just to see what they where. They were about an 1/8th of an inch gap. Put it all back together and runs good. Also thanks to all that have responded to all of are questions that I have put on.

You had better luck than me. My W9 had a loud knock when I bought it. #4 valve was running a 3/8" gap. Set it to spec and I suddenly had a dead cylinder, but no noise. Had to be 3/8" to run. Rockers, pushrods, tappets, rocker shaft all OK. Pulled the head and all the valves were perfect, near new in fact. Pulled it into the shop for some rear end work and pulled the camshaft. While I couldn't tell if it was bent, it was obviously damaged directly adjacent to #4 lobe. Looks like something got wedged in. Had a replacement cam on hand and swapped it out.

Should have had the spare cam ground to 650 gasser specs! But I did find out the engine has high-dome pistons.
