I have a curious issue with a 656 I hope someone can explain. The T/A works fine on the tractor, however when you push in the clutch and stop the tractor when it is in the DD side, the tractor acts almost like you have the brake on or like something is in a bind and you cannot hardly shift it. When you are in the TA side this does not happen. Hope someone has seen this before and knows what it is. Is it maybe a T/A adjustment issue? Thanks for any ideas!

Scott: Clutch and TA are out of adjustment. These must be adjusted by the book, close doesn't count, not even a little bit. Get yourself a manual PDQ.

Hugh's right on the money. Get it adjusted ASAP. Both the I&T manual and the owner's manual will have the procedure.

Scott: The IH manual uses a diagram, and like a ptoto, it's worth a thousand words. Precisely why we didn't try to describe. Remember I said, close doesn't count.

I will add that when adjusting, pay particular attention to the part where you measure the 1/16 gap on the clevis that is on the ta operating rod coming down from the ta lever. I use a drill bit, that works well. The idea of that part of the adjustment is to get complete release of ta clutch when lever is pulled. Rest of adjustments are to establish free travel on both the clutch release bearing and ta clutch release. End result of correct adjustment is same release of ta clutch when you push clutch pedal that you get when pulling ta lever.I have had to enlongate the slot on part that contacts main clutch operating shaft on many also to get correct end result.

This is an important point. To understand the TA linkage you must understand that the TA clutch must be released when you pull back the lever and also when you step on the clutch. The latter is not happening on yours, which is why it is hard to shift.
