Thanks to all of you who helped with info on width adjustments on the Farmall B I hauled from Texas to Florida. All went well and the tractor is now residing in my barn.

I was doing some tune up work to get the B up and running and cleaned all of the old crud and grease out of the magneto. I'm new to magnetos (my other Farmalls all have distributors), but noted that the Blue Ribbon Service Manual for magnetos calls for IHC Magneto grease.

I have Mobile synthetic grease in my gun and generally use that on cars trailers and other equipment. I would have used the same on the magneto without a second thought if the manual said "grease the gears etc., with a good quality grease". But the book was quite specific and insisted on IHC Magneto Grease. Are there specific qualities that magneto grease must have to prevent wear? Can you still get IHC Magneto Grease? If not what is the acceptable substitute?

As always, thanks for all of your responses. Once I finally figure out how to post a picture, I'll drop a picture of the B.

Right or wrong, when I went through the magneto on my H, I used the same grease that we use for everything else. No problems in 250 hours and seven years or so.

I don't have that manual so can't say whee they're calling for "magneto grease." If you're talking about greasing the shaft, any good grease will do it. The big caution is to only give it a stroke or two from the gun, no more. Any more and you'll be driving grease into places where you don't want it, just like the stuff you cleaned up..

If you're talking about under the arm of the points, where it rides on the cam, that is a lighter grease (usually comes in a pill-type capsule). Not sure what it is, but you usually get a dose of it along with a new set of points.

Slappy - For years I kept a tube of IHC magneto grease in my toolbox. It seemed no different than regular gun grease except lighter in color and perhaps a bit stiffer. Unfortunately it was lost in a tragic shop accident (got run over by my kid's Crown Vic).

Anyway I have since substituted white Lubriplate, snowmobile grease, Silglide and plain old Mobil gun grease in magnetos, distributors, speedo cables, etc.

Far as I can tell all work just fine. The Silglide however seems closest to the original IHC mag grease in color/consistency. It's also supposed to be more water resistant than regular grease.

I was always under the impression that the IH magneto grease would not separate the way most common gun grease does. That way, you won't have the oil component slinging around and encouraging stray spark jumps. I think dielectric tune-up grease is probably the best substitute. I still have a tube of the real thing.
