For some reason the cam timing gear on my 52 super m broke and half of it came through the front cover i was curious if anyone ever saw this before and if so what causes it? What if any other damage will be consequence? Last but not least when i put it back together how do i line up all the gears? thanks in advance............

does it have live hyds? it usually happens with a load on the hyds. or in winter with thick oil.probably will need a cam also as the key way gets damaged also.there is timing marks on the gears to line up.

You will probably need to bring No1 piston to TDC on the compression stroke once you have the new gear installed and then look at your rotor to see where its pointing. You may need to pull the distributor then turn the rotor to the No1 plug tower and reinstall. Hal

yes it does have live hydraulics.I am taking the parts off a 49 m to fix it and my next question is is everything the same cam, cam gear, cover, etc.?as long as i use the lifters off the cam in the other motor, in order of course it should be fine right? thanks again guys

Cam and gear may be the same, but lots of parts are changed from original in these old tractors. All cams for the engine series M trough 450 will interchange and work. Only a look at the # on parts will tell if its the exact same. For the cam gear look at the part # and suffix on gear. The 49 M would come with a gear # ending in D originaly. Look for one with end # DA or DB they are stronger built to help on breakage. Front cover on the 49 M will have a different bolt pattern where ignition drive bracket or some live hydraulic pumps bolt on than your SM. Depending on what pump you have it may or may not work. Some hydraulic pumps with a place on shaft for a hour meter drive gear will contact some early covers inside before mounting face is flush. Unless your cam is damaged you may be able to keep it. Just in case you dont know the oil pump needs removed to remove cam. Also don't knock cam toward rear of engine because there's a exspantion plug in rear of block that if moved could leak.
