1586 vs 5288

I have been looking at two tractors recently. A "80 1586 and a "82 5288. Both are in the 160 hp class, which is what I am interested in. I was wondering your opinion on which you guys would get. They are close in price range. I grew up on a 86 series tractor so I am familar with them, but not too familiar with the 88 series. Any thoughts on engines, trans, operation?

Thanks

Only thing I know about the 5288 is there will be more usable gears than the 1586 for field work.

5288 is a lot more tractor than a 1586, much more complex power train, more versatile hydraulic system, not that I ever really fell in love with their overall design. IH went back to using external hydraulic lines instead of internal passages, so you have a myraid of hoses, pipes etc, synchronized transmission gears, full planetery final drive,(1586 used drop gear fron diff to a planetery) PFC hydraulics , fwd air flow through radiator etc.

A 5288 would be my choice simply for the transmission...

1586: High and Low range with three gears in each +TA
5288: High, Medium, and Low range with six gears in each (gears are paired via electronically shifted TA)

1586: gear clashing non-synchronized transmission, difficult to get going in road gear due to large gear splits.
5288: 1-2, 3-4, and 5-6 power shift (TA) 2-3 and 4-5 are synchronized and slide right in.

I believe the 88 series has a somewhat better hydraulic system, but I'm not sure. The 88 series looks sharper in my opinion, too...

try to find the starter on the 1586. it was enough to point me to the 5288. actually, both good tractors, but I'd favor the 5288 for the previous mentioned reasons.

My main issue with the 88 series is they were only made a few years in low numbers. That means there are few in salvage for parts. New parts are also very spendy and many are NLA. My suggestion would be to consider a 7100 series Magnum. Much improved transmission and used, new and aftermarket parts are readily available. They have come down in price so they are very reasonable alternative to the 86 and 88 series tractors.

Our 1586 will walk all over our 5288, both stock, the 5288 cost lots more to redo the tranny and rear end IF you can find the parts, beleive me been there done that, 1586 parts are more available, my 2 cents
