Hey guys, I"m not currently an IH guy, but am about to become one. A fried picked up a 1486 at an auction for me, but I haven"t got to see it yet. I"ve done some reading on the TA"s, and am just curious if this is how a "mechanical diode" setup works? Or do you think they"ve pulled the TA clear out and went with a straight shaft, and are using this toggle for something different?

A diode ta is bacically the same as any other t/a. Instead of a sprag they use a ratchet tooth system inside the upper gear. The diode t/a's are garbage. I've been building t/a's for almost 17 years now and have a lot of the diode t/a cores that are junk because the system is welded to the gear.

So the manual lever would still be required, right? When guys just pull the TA and replace it with a straight shaft, is it common practice to then just remove the lever as shown in the picture? There wasn't an 'electric' TA retrofit available was there? Thanks.

You can install an electric shifted TA in the 86 series, like the newer 30 series used and also an elec over hydraulic transmission brake. Interesting reading about the diode TA as IH just came with them when I left to work at Deere. All my experience is with the original sprag type and some of the fully hydraulic low side as sold by Hy-Capacity, which I do not like because you have neutral between shifts from direct drive to TA. When you put in the eliminator kit you just throw the lever away.

Look behind the lh battery at the MSV valve. The spool coming out of the top towards the front of the valve will have a solenoid assy above it that the switch runs. When engaged it will push the spool down to the snap ring & when not a spring will pull it up.

Very interesting. So the solenoid just replaces the lever linkage, but is doing the same work? The TA itself is all the same? Was this option put out by IH, or just an aftermarket company? Again, I've never had an international, nor any tractor with a TA for that matter, so sorry for all of the questions. I'm really curious now to see if the solenoid is just not operating, or if the TA has just gone out. Thanks again for all of your input!!

IH never installed the electric control on the 86 series, but they did make a kit available if customer wanted it. I believe they still used the ta lever to operate a electrical switch, or you could just put in a toggle switch. I did install the electric controlled transmission brake on a 1086, advantage was that you hooked it in conjunction with clutch pedal and range trans lever so brake does not apply when tractor is in gear, making it easier to shift out of gear, and it did stop the gears readily. M &W had what they called tender foot attachment that applies both ta clutch packs on depression of clutch, IH strongly disapproved of this as you basically were locking trans solid when depressing clutch to floor and if tractor was rolling it put lots of strain on things, that being said, one of my customers has one for 20 years now with no problem but he knows how to operate it.
