Got a 12v genny

I found a 12v genny at a friend's place from the tractor club. He had an old beat up MD sitting around, and sure enough, there was a Delco 12v genny under the hood. So, we popped it off and he gave it to me. :D I dropped it off at another friend's who will be taking it to a guy he knows who owns an automotive electrical shop to test it.

I read on here that a person "should" get a Delco VR, correct? Or if not, what should I be looking for?

And for those that know about Gennys... for my own education... What sort of things should be done to the genny to inspect it and make sure it's good for the long term? I have no idea how long it's been sitting outside. Should rebuild it in some fasion or another to ensure long term usefullness?

As far as the Voltage Regulator, its not so much the brand you get BUTTTTTTTT it (same as Generator) needs to for be a Class A charging system as opposed to a Class B like some older Ford products used. The people who advise to get a Delco arent all that far off, they are thinking get a Delco which many Class A systems used as opposed to say an Autolite which maybe some Fords used. The terms Delco and Class A often go together.......Also the VR needs to be compatible with your ground, be it Pos or Neg. Some VR"s will work at either ground, some are labeled specifically for Pos or Neg ground...

NAPA has good ones also. Rather pricey though.

VR 897 is a three terminal unit with a curved bracket to mount on top of your gen Pos or Neg ground.

VR899 is a four terminal unit with a curved bracket, Pos or Neg ground.

Personally I would go for the four terminal unit as I think it gives better regulation.

You need the Delco Remy # on the plate and it should have a red background if its 12v then with that # you can get the correct reg for it as they do list more than one. I just looked up 12v Delco 12v regs for I-H and there are 5 listed. So you need the # of the gen

I knew it would happen! If you are going with Negative ground (compatible with cars/trucks of today) make sure the VR is for Negative ground, or built to be non polarity specific. Some new regulators have solid state components that will smoke like a wet leaf fire if put on the wrong polarity. John T (as usual) is on track. JimN

Mike: A few months ago you were asking about drilling holes through your generator. Are you planning to do that to this one? I hope not....

Must have been a "mounting the VR" question. I don't recall.
