Got my SH split today (finally) and need help rmoving the clutch and flywheel. This is the first tractor I have split and my dad errors on the side of caution and wants me to find out what bolts to take out to remove the clutch and flywheel rather then just tearing into it. Any body got any pictures or be able to walk me through it?? Thanx!!
 
The clutch is held on to the outside of the flywheel by 6 bolts. There is a remote chance that you have to insert bolts into the clutch housing to hold the pressure plate together during removal. My SH does not have those, I think that is true of the later Rockford clutch that is on your tractor. Once you remove the clutch, the bolts for the flywheel are evident. As a caution, the flywheel is heavy. I usually put a block under mine in case I drop it. If you have the flywheel machined, be sure to have the machinest take the same amount off the step that the clutch bolts to as he does from the flywheel surface. I think the official spec from the flywheel surface to the step is 1.188 inches. The best buy you will find on a rebuilt clutch (pressure plate and disk) is from Steel Wheel Ranch, about $200 minus a $24 core charge plus shipping for my 460, about the same clutch. Includes pilot and release bearings. 785-548-7437.
 
Ok that is what I thought but just wanted to make sure. Thank you! Not replacing the clutch but had to split the tractor to replace the rear main seals on the engine that were leaking. Will replace clutch release and pilot bearings while it is apart. I built a stand so it really wasnt as hard as I thought it was going to be!
 
How thick is a new clutch plate? Mine is 5/16" thick right now. Looks like it still has quite a bit of life left.
