Size of 300 axles

I went out to the farm today to put my axle seals in the 300. Already had it up on blocks last weekend. So I took a buddy with me. Along with him and my dad we took the wheels off and the hubs off. I took the covers off the end of the axle housing. Went to check to see if I had the right seals and low and behold they were wrong. Which didn't surprise me. I bought them from the local auto parts store and they told them I could bring them back if they were wrong. My question is what size are the axles on the 300 row crop? I measured them and they were 2 1/2 inches across and the seals I had purchased was 1 3/4 inches. The old seals and the new seals looked identical except the size. I just want to make sure the tractor has the right axles in it so I don't spend a bunch of time trying to find the right ones.

Breakdowns show it to be either 2 1/2" or 2 3/4" depending on the axle you have. Since you measured them at 2 1/2", I'd go with that. You'll also have the felt washer in there.

BTW, the IH breakdown doesn't show the axle size, but you can find it under on 235 of the farmall set.

I assume the felt gaskets you are talking about are the ones between the housing and the cover I took off that hold the axle seal? Can I reuse that or use some RTV gasket maker? They don't seem bad maybe just a little brittle but I didn't break them. I guess I should have ordered the seals from on here but they wanted $9.00 a peice to ship them. They only cost $9.50 to start with. Oh well lesson learned!

Mark, $9.00 for shipping seems to be rather high, but how much did it cost you to drive around and visit various parts stores until you finally found what you needed? If you add up the fuel you burned, the wear and tear on your vehicle, tire wear, etc, I think you will find that you spent considerably MORE than $9. If you had ordered those parts on-line, they would be delivered right to your door, and you would not have needed to even start your engine.

Actually the parts store I bought them from is right across the street from were I work. I walked there on my lunch break. I didn't check anywhere else except on the internet. Closest CaseIH dealer is 30 miles away. Didn't want to drive that far for $10.00 seals. Coworker told me that he orders alot of stuff for his WD-45 at the same parts store. So I thought I would keep my money local and they always treat me right. I probably will end up ordering the ones off here cause I know they are right. I wasn't complaining. Sorry if that was the way I came off sounding.

No apologies needed. I was merely trying to show the whole picture. Since I also have an on-line store and ship items out all over the U.S., I do know the costs associated with shipping, and I also know how much it costs to get in my truck and go after that stuff.

Hugh, I order from two different suppliers. Both of them will have my order in my hands in two days or less via U.P.S.. and when I sell an item, it goes out via U.S.P.S. priority mail, and is nearly always in the customers hands within 2 to 3 days or less.

Rusty: I wasn't talking about speed, but rather getting it right. I'm in the middle of one right now, don't think they have a clue what a complete axle assembly for a disk includes. This is not the first time, first business or first item.

I understand. I tend to shy away from handling those kind of parts. Too many changes in part numbers, oem suppliers, etc. Not quite as bad as finding the correct part for a Japanese motorcycle, but almost.
