Oil filter change over

I went to a tractor show over the weekend and noticed a lot of the IH brand tractors had the new style (spin on)oil filters,instead of the old cannister style. I have a 340 utility do you think I could use the new style filter? Could a parts store cross the #'s for me? Thanks for help. Al
 

It's not as simple as getting a different filter. There is an adapter that bolts to the oil filter base.

As I recall the adapters were made when these tractors were still front-line farm machines and still saw heavy use. I don't know if you can even get the adapters anymore.

Frankly, is it really worth the time and expense for at most one oil change a year?

You are right about time and $$ for once a year. It looked like a quick easy change. Thankyou for your reply. Reminded me of something my Dad would would have said. Al
 
I just changed oil in my H yesterday and looking back, I don't think it took much longer than if it would have had a spin on. The only thing that slowed me down was going back to the tool box to get a thin screwdriver to pick the old gasket out.
 
I think you might be able to get a kit to change to a spin on ,but i think it would cost about 70 dollars or more. Well thats here in ontario. I bought one for a 140 but thats been about 5 years ago. You could call your case ih dealer and ask for a price thats where i got mine.
 
The spin on adapter is available thru IH.
I installed one on my 44H. It was easy to install and filters are plentiful. I installed one on my tractor because I could not find the correct filter for the my tractor. Having used it I don't see where it saves any time or money nor do I feel it is more effective than the original filters.
