Super W-6 ground question

Dad just bought a super w-6...all original...we bought it off the original owners grandson....what we are curious about is if it's supposed to be pos or neg ground...it's orig 6V but they have it hooked up neg ground and our other 6v tractors are pos ground...thanks for any help

Your W6 came from the factory positive ground. However how it is grounded now is at the whim of previous owner(s).

If it were mine I"d switch back to positive ground like your other tractors: Swap the wires at the ammeter and on the coil, swap the cables at the battery, then repolarize the generator (momentarily jumper the BAT and ARM terminals on the regulator).

is it possible that they just switched the battery terminals and nothing else? i know that happened on my AC WC and the guys on the allis forum told me that whichever way it was hooked up it would turn my starter the same way so alls i had to do was swap the battery cables....after that everything worked perfect and i had no more battery drain..maybe the previous owner just hooked it up the way his car was hooked up and never did anything else as far as wiring? if by doing that too without swapping the other wires could that burn out the voltag regulator an cause it not to charge?..is it possible if i switched it back around it would start easier...right now we have a decent battery but can;t hardly get it to roll over...and i am tired of hand cranking it..i know i'm young but man it has compression!

It is indeed possible to reverse the ground polarity by simply swapping the battery cables and doing nothing else. The tractor will still start and run fine.

But if the generator is not re-polarized the battery will not be charged. Further it will likely burn out the voltage regulator – also possibly the generator. Nor will reversing ground polarity have any effect on the battery running down when the engine is shut down.

Swapping your W6 back to positive ground will have no effect on cranking speed. If that's a problem first be looking for bad (corroded) or undersized battery cables. (Cables should be at least 1/0 with SOLDERED terminals). If the cables are good then check the starter for worn brushes, bad commutator, dry bearings, etc. Also check and replace the starter switch if necessary.

starter switch was just replaced....battery is from 2006 but the guy never run it very much..sat in his garage....generator does not put anything out....ammeter works backwards i think dad said...like it goes to plus when he turns the lights on....not ure on the valtage regulator.....we will investigate some more....does ahnyone have a wiring digram for this tractor??

OK - the backward reading ammeter with the battery connected negative ground says the ammeter is still wired for positive ground. Most likely is the coil is too.

I can almost guarantee the voltage regulator is fried. Recommend replacing it with a new one. Then reconnect the battery for positive ground and polarize the generator. Finally start it up and see if it charges.

If it does, it's time to celebrate(!)

But if it does not, walk thru the generator/regulator troubleshooting chart on my next post below. It will help you isolate the cause of the "no charge" condition.
