Farmall A main bearings

I was just wondering what is involved in replacing the main bearing in a 1946 Farmall A? Do you have to remove the crankshaft if the crankshaft is in great condition? Can you do it right from the oil pan? Thanks.

Are you talking main seals or main bearings? I don't know any way to determine that a crank is in great condition without pulling it out of the motor. Especially if it needs a main bearing (There are three of them in an A.)

Either way, you need to haul the motor for main bearings, or rear main seal. Front seal on the crank CAN be done without pulling the motor, but does require splitting to get the front casting away so you can pull the crank pulley. There are ways to do that on the tractor but, often, you wind up having to pull the motor to put the crank in a press to remove the pulley.

Thanks for the info. The main seals were already replaced. I just wanted to know can I change the main bearings without pulling the crank.

You'll have to pull the motor, at the very least, to get the the flange and flywheel clear of the torque tube and the crank pulley clear of the front end. Once you've gone that far, it's a minor job to pull the caps on the mains and rods to replace any bearings. And only then, when your crank is out, can you take the measurements to determine that it is in good shape, for either wear or symmetry.

If your engine needs mains it probably needs to be pulled and torn down and doing a complete engine rebuild. Have the block cleaned, crankshaft measured for wear, new sleeves and pistons, have the head redone and check the clutch disc for wear and install all new bearings mains and rods. Hal
PS: This A was done in 1975 & 1976.
