Still Working On Brush On Color for A WithOUT Hardener

Has anyone used the "Rust-Oleum Farm Equipment Red Matches International Color.?"
Since I painted my Ford 8N with Rust-Oleum Sunrise Red and was very pleased, I thought I might try the Rust-Oleum Red "Matches International Red" for the A.
I will say this: This paint is LESS ORANGE LOOKING than the Case IH 2150.
What's your opinion, is the Rust-Oleum as good a quality paint as the Case IH 2150?
Tom

Hello Tom: No Rust Oleum is NOT as good paint for a Farmall compared to 2150. I painted a small crawler (MF200) maybe 18 years ago and it looked great for about a year. I borrowed from the buyer about 3 years after painting and it started looking poor already. Too soft and would not take sunshine. I'll use that again on only something real rusty like a old rusty wheelborrow. ..but I am not an expert on painting but my cheap spray cans from Walmart will last longer. ag

Tom, I have tried many.
I found Ox-Rust (Regal Red)
it says International Harvester match on can
Worked good and is good match for color.
Sold at true value hardware stores. Brush or spray. oldiron29

There are no hardware/tractor store paints as good as 2150. Color won't be correct either. Have some IH 50 mixed as acrylic enamel, maybe $80.

Tom,I have always used 2150,except for my first tractor that I painted, and I bought a gal of Chinese Red from one of our local paint stores and it was red and after 8 years it hasnt faded, also it didnt need primer

Why would you not want to do it right? Buy the correct color from the equipment manufacture and be done with it. All your cutting shortcuts and buying cheap off brand paint just makes your piece look bad. A bad paint job is much much worse than no paint job. Its alot of work to remove a bad paint job and redo it right. It's just as much work to paint it with the correct paint as it is with cheap junk.

I painted this old Toro mower with that paint. You should get Martin Senours or Duponts acrylic enamel and spray it without hardener. Will look a lot better than brushing it. Hal

Red is red to me. I like all shades. I have used the gloss black Rustoleum cut with a little white to make Farmall gray for many years and have been real happy with it.

When I painted the cast frame, radiator and engine on my 10-20 I used Dupont Centari without hardener and brushed it on just the cast parts. It looked super nice! I did try it on the sheet metal, but I have to say there is a trick to that and I didn't work with it long enough to figure it out so I would spray sheetmetal, but the cast parts MAM o MAN! I have brushpainted with lacquer years ago and it came out good as a spray job. Had to use slow dry thinner and a very good brush. Cheap brush will not cut it at all and will ruin the job. One brush for primer, and another for color. Spread paint one direction and then go back and do it again diagonally then back the same direction. Have to be fast or it will start to ball up. Then when all is done and dry good for a few days, wet sand with sanding block and very fine paper like 800- 1000 grit and rub it out.

CNKS, you wrote, "There are no hardware/tractor store paints as good as 2150. Color won't be correct either. Have some IH 50 mixed as acrylic enamel, maybe $80."
So you are saying that as paints without using hardeners go, 2150 is OK?
I thought 2150 was NOT correct as such.
What do you mean by, "have some IH 50 mixed as acrylic enamel?" I thought there is no longer any IH 50.
Please explain.
Thanks,
Tom

2150 and 50 can be custom mixed by PPG/DuPont, etc. The PPG/Dupont codes for IH 50 are 70019/7410. For 2150 they are 71310/96766, Can be crossed to any major paint manufacturer. IH 50 cannot be bought from Case IH, nor can the other two reds from that era, IH 1102B and IH 201. The acrylic enamel mixed as IH 50 may or may not be higher quality than the 2150 CaseIH sells, it will be more expensive and a different shade.

The current problem is getting the "correct" paint. Enviornmental regulations have resulted in formulation changes, meaning the current 2150 CaseIH sells is not the same color they sold 10 years ago. Same with PPG, I don't know about Dupont, etc. I use PPG and have had them change the toners used in the mixing process to get the color I "think" is correct. I'm not fully satisfied yet, but haven't painted for a couple of years -- will try again on my next tractor. The original colors no longer exist.
