my F14 governor? maybe?

As some of you know the F14 is finished (minus a paint job), running, starter added, and a whole lot of fun to tinker around on. It's amazing (at least in the wife's eyes) how many things it can be used for around the yard.

Here's the situation though.

It runs great at idle speed, and when it is actually under a load. So far the biggest load it has pulled is my truck - and that was just for fun. When you throttle it up it likes to sputter a bit, and surges, most especially when just driving around. It will come out of it, but when the governor is needed it will do it again. It seems like the governor doesn't do much until you load it down, which I think is the way I remember it always being - but it has been 20 years so I might not remember right.

I did have the governor all apart when I rebuilt the engine - put all new bearings in it, and replaced the shaft that connects to the carb linkage. It just never seemed quite right when I put it back together. When I intalled it back on the tractor it seemed kind of like it had tension on the fork for the weights.

The engine seems like its under a slight load all the time - even at idle and not moving. At any rate it doesn't seem to purr like I remember it used to.

Any suggestions?

Doug, I put new bearings in my '36 F-12 I seem to think it had free play and the bearing would jump the fork, Than bind so I adjusted it so with the new bearing and motor not running and trottle slack the fork stay on bearing. it seems to work fine. Not shure if that right I would have to get out the book. oldiron29

Im wondering if you have the timing set just right.

Doug,On my 14 the governor didn't feel the same as my 12,but my 12 has a road gear in it which probably put more pressure on the motor. After I made sure my mag was clicking on the timing mark the governor improved greatly

John I thought about that but it seems to start good. Of course it could still be a little off. But I think I'll check it again this weekend just to make sure.
