M Farmall water pump packing leak

What function do the springs on the water pump drive coupler provide? I put a new belt on the generator and had to take the water pump drive belt off to do it since the other belt is behind it. While I had it apart I noticed coolant weeping a little out of the packing area. The water pump shaft slides in and out quite a bit without it being bolted to the drive coupling. I noticed the leak seems to have almost quit after I got it running so I'm wondering if the spring tension took care of the problem?

The springs hold the impeller thrust surfaces in contact with one another. Without them the impeller would rub against the block. Over the years the shaft can become pitted in spots. The packing seals a lot better where the shaft is smooth.

Thanks. Maybe if I just tighten the packing nut a little bit it might take care of the leak altogether? Otherwise can the packing be added to with the water pump on the tractor after the block is drained? I can imagine it would be a lot easier if the pump was off the engine but I'd rather not go through the belt procedure again if I can get by without.
