I am needing some tips and info. on visiting the Wisconsin Historical Socitey Museum. I am wanting to research Farmalls of course (mainly the 300's). Does any one have tips about visiting the museum. I am going to visit the museum in Madison (I think that is the one with all the "good" stuff). I am coming from So. Ill so any additional stops that might be of interest please let me know.

Illinois railway Museum West of Belvedere, ILL is way cool if you like rolling stock. Well worth the stop. JimN

Well, for one thing, the IH Archives is an archives, not a museum. Very different things. It's more like a library. Contact Lee Grady at the archives about visiting.

If you like seeing interesting stuff, you might also plan a side trip to the "House on the Rock" just west of Madison. I know it seems like a tourist trap, but I love the place, it's a good way to kill a few hours, and I think I counted 7 steam engines inside.

I went to the house on the rock once, I figured that guy must have hit every auction in the country plus some other countries to Very Interesting

I hope you have a good map. Madison has a lot of triangles, one-way streets, a mall (no private cars) on State St.
The Historical Society is in the Campus (UW) area & the Memorial Union is just across the street (pretty good food, view of the lake).
The State Capitol about 8 or 10 blocks away is pretty impressive. Lots of restaurants nearby.
Madison is sort of a party town, downtown. I'm guessing quieter motels will be out by the Beltline- not downtown.
You'll probably have to park in a parking ramp & feed a meter (while visiting the Historical Society & downtown). I haven't lived in Madison for 7 years now, but I hope you enjoy your visit.

Verona, WI is just west of the Socialist Republic of Madison - good burgers/chili/selection of beer; out in the country on a county trunk road. Another place about four blocks from the museum is www.theplazatavern.com
enjoy your visit to the Badger State and spend lots of $$'s as the governor has the state facing over a $5.8 billion deficit.

Not to overdo it, but I'm not exactly sure which building you want to do research in. There's the Museum up on the Capitol Square and then there's the Historical Society Library building (has history stuff, genealogy info., etc.) about 8 blocks away down in the Campus area. So obviously, I'd want to know for sure which building to visit. Mark.

A little off the topic, but might interest someone out there. I wrote Lee Grady about donating some old farm tractor sales brochures, and he replied right away and said the society would welcome anything of that nature. If you have that kind of stuff and are tired of it, you can give it to the society, take a tax deduction. Of course you could probably sell it on E-Bay or Craig's List for more than the tax deduction. I think that society's interest in making a good library for research is a great thing.
