Drive your engine clean?

Just curious about the expected results on carb operation (sorry for the title...couldn't resist the old Amoco slogan) from using a "fuel system cleaner" that one would pour into the gas tank?

Working again on my 460U-gas, and something isn't quite right. To be honest I haven't done anything other than split the carb, wash out all the junk & water, make sure the float needle was free to move. That made a huge difference right there.

The tractor runs decent and I can drive it all over and use the loader, but seems to lack the grunt that I think it should have...just starting off in various gears seems to be more of an effort than I think it should be and I wonder if it would even pull a single bottom plow.

One of my apparent problems is that the governor appears slow to "kick in" which needs other work on the mechanism and linkage, but I was considering the fuel system cleaner in building a "comprehensive plan". Most of my experience is on automotive fuel injection systems which don't have as many adjustments built in.

Just cuz it starts and makes noise don't mean it "runs decent" Could be lots of things and probably is. On a 50 year old tractor I seldom find just [i:654c4848f0]one[/i:654c4848f0] thing wrong.

Forget the cleaner. The governor is easy to work on. Get a repair kit from Case-IH, you also need a manual to tell you what to do, or perhaps someone who types faster than I do can type it for you. Adjust the main jet on the carb to 3-3.5 turns out. Be sure the carb is absolutely clean. Max is 5, but that is for maximum load which I doubt if you need. The only gear you should have trouble starting in is 5th. You can also check the compression, but it probably has to be well below 100 to act as you are saying.

Open that main jet that's been mentioned as this will enrich the fuel mixture. Hal
PS: Even has to done on garden tractors.

slow ignition timing will cause hesitation & will act like it is lean also. I find that wrong with a lot of old gas tractors

If the carburator was a bad as you say, then you need to completely clean the carburator, the fuel line and the sediment bowl. If the gasoline in the tank was old, it may run bad until that old gasoline is gone. You could try adding some Stabil (sp) and let it set for a day or so. Even after cleaning the carburator bowl and the sediment bowl, you may have to drain it down severl times to get it to clear up. We had this problem every time ours would set up over winter. Keep flushing out the carburator, the fuel line, and the sediment bowl until a couple of tanks of gasoline have been burned. If it still runs rough after that you have other problems.
