This is my 53 Super MD that i got brought home yesterday. Seems to run very well on gas and switch over, but it wont ideal down very low and doesn't seem to have that much power, thats in comparison to my 41 M. The pump has been injector pump has been rebuilt and so has the injectors themselves. The guy who had the tractor before me just had these done less than a year ago so i believe there good. However the tractor has sat from October till yesterday could the filters be clogged, or do i need to adjust the pump? I have both the service and the operators manual. I just dont really know where to start, but i think it should have more power than what it does.

Thanks for the help!!

Not a bad looking tractor. Good running SMD have pretty good power, should have as much as your M. Don't know if your gauge is good on pump. If it is and the needle goes up to operating range the filters should be okay. You should be able to idle the engine down and shut off with hand throttle. Check easy stuff first, timing, fuel flow, throttle linkage, if you have a tach is engine going to rated RPM, intake air restriction, if there's still a problem it may be the governor in pump or a sticking rack. Also could have low compression.

And you got the nice ChrLyn torque generator, and cast iron saginaw pump for power steering. Nice unit.

Thanks guys, she runs good does not seem to miss, skip, hesitate and does not smoke wide open at all however im not used to hearing a diesel engine either... I know that i have to fix the hand throttle there seems to be quite a play in the linkage that goes down to from the vertical shaft the horizontal shaft that goes to the friction disk set up (that to needs help). i guess the problem im having is that i believe its gets down to about 800 rpms and then it dies out... is there a 'kill' switch in the pump or something or can i turn up the low idle?

I hate to say this, but when a MD doesn't idle down it is ordinarily the injection pump main plunger being worn and of course then may not deliver full fuel under load .

could the primary pump be the problem ? that was not rebuilt The injector pump was. could i put a 0 -75 lb oil pressure gauge to make sure i am getting pressure at the pump ?

Thanks very much for the help

Make sure all the linkages travel full stop to stop. Mine had an issue with power, but would idle. I took the pump apart and cleaned out varnished up old diesel that was about like the finish on a straight backed farm chair that still had the original finish+ 80 years of hand oil and stickie kids fingers. Id play with the pump timing a little.Easy to check.Take cover off timing gear housing in front of pump.Easy to adjust, loosen bolts on front of gear and turn accordingly.Cant remember which way.Outta have a manuel to use.Pumps are quite simple, dont be asceerd of taking apart and cleaning it up. If the injector pump has been off you might need to check if the timing is right. Incorrect timing will cause lack of power and not idle correct. I owned a SMD thirty years ago and wish I still had it today. I pulled 3-16 bottom plow and 10 ft disc in 3rd gear and still had power.

Congratulations on your SMD. I too just got an MD,
a 48, in rougher shape than yours. Yours looks great in comparison. Mine runs well, but only on the diesel side. I'm trying to fix the gas side now which includes everything, leaking starting tank, dead magneto, gunked up carb, etc. I also have the same issue as in your tractor with the sloppy throttle linkage. Good luck with your new machine. They are quite intriguing.

(quoted from post at 13:46:10 03/22/09) the power steering works really well too, im actually impressed how well it works too!

That's the same PS set-up Dad had put on a JD 60 back in '58. A neighbor with a 60 and factory PS said the Char-Lynn/Saginaw pump was better than his.
Also on the power, diesel engines need to be up to speed to get the power out of them. Have you compared the gas to diesel with them both up to speed? Low end torque may not compare well.
