350 utility rocker arms won't move

This is not good. It died on me and I towed it back to the barn. At first I thought it was a carburation problem as it was not pulling gas up the intake Then I pulled a plug and realized I have no compression. Popped the valve cover and I see no movement on the rocker arms at all. However the distributor is still firing. Now I am leaving it sit for a warmer day.
Any ideas? I am hoping maybe a timing gear broke. Or maybe the cam broke. I am not sure what drives the distributor. I guess i will find out when I pull the front off the engine. I thought I would post this to see if anyone had this happen to them.
 
Jeff - Sounds like the cam gear hub broke. (The cam gear is still going around and driving distributor/live pump gear but is no longer turning the cam).

Quick check is to pull the live pump and peek inside the timing gear case. If you can wiggle the timing gear back and forth with your fingers it's time for a new cam gear.

Thanks for the response. It makes sense to me. It it a keyed hub? It would be great if I only need to switch out the gear. I hope it did not damage the camshaft itself. Guess i really won't know until I take a look

Yes, it is keyed. The gear can be pulled after removing the nut (right-hand thread) and tab washer leaving the camshaft in place. You won't have to remove the lifters or push rods if the camshaft is still intact.
 
Jeff - Unlikely it damaged the camshaft. Usually only a new gear (and possibly a new the keeper for the nut) is required.

Note! Depending on the model/year of the engine the camshaft nut can be either right- or left-handed. (My Super M is right-handed; a buddy's 400 is left) Recommend closely inspecting the threads sticking out of the nut to make sure you're turning it the proper direction to loosen(!)
