12v Generator

Putting a re-built 12v generator on my 300 in a couple of days. Question is; will the electrical shop tell me if the generator is neg. or pos. ground and will i need to change the lights to 12v bulbs or will the old ones be ok. Thanks....H

Bulbs will have to be 12V.Put a resistor on the point wire going to the distributor to prevent points from burning out.

You will have to polarize the generator for the polarity that you want. The shop can tell you what to do. If the tractor is now pos ground, which it was originally, you will have to reverse the amp meter wires or it will read backwards. use the 6V starter, it will work real good, On mine, instead of using an inline resistor, I got a coil withan internal resister. OEM tractor parts has one that looks like the original one on the tractor, but it ain't cheap. Like the other guy said put in 12V bulbs or they will have a very short life.

The ballast/converting/dropping resistor ALWAYS goes between the ignition switch and the coil. NEVER between the coil and the distributor. For best spark you DO NOT want the resistor between the coil and the condensor!

For little more than the cost of a resistor you can get a NAPA IC14-SB coil which is a TRUE 12-Volt coil and needs NO external resistor.

Welllllllll the shop CAN go ahead and Polarize the Genny for Pos or Neg Ground as you wish, but Id just polarize it myself once its installed to be safe n sure but BEFORE you start it.

Change the lights to 12 volts.

If its a coil ignition you can:

EITHER add a series external voltage dropping (12 to 6) Ballast Resistor AFTER the Ignition Switch but before/ahead of the coil OR ELSE buy a new full true 12 volt coil NO ballast required.

Wire the coil to match the polarity i.e. for Pos grnd the coils lil - terminal gets ign switched voltage while its lil + wires to distributor but opposote that for Neg ground.

If it has an ammeter and you change polarity from original the leads need swapped or it will register bass ackwards

If this was my tractor, I would use the ballast resistor with a std 6volt coil and replace the magnetic switch on the starter with a 12 volt style that has the extra terminal for a bypass wire to coil for full battery voltage when starting.
