International A bogging down?

I've got an International A that we haven't used since Nov/2008. Before putting it away, I filled the gas tank, added fuel stabilizer, shut the fuel off & ran the carb dry. When I went to start the tractor, it started instanly...so, last weekend, I did an oil change....Yesterday was the 1st day I really "worked" the tractor. I used it all day, but I noticed it has a loss of power in 3rd gear & almost bogs right out in 4th? I used this tractor all last year pulling a trailer & it never lacked power (for what it is). I pulled the plugs & they look fine, I checked my spark & it is snapping blue, what else can cause this? thanks

A couple of thoughts you might consider but they're probably pretty well out there. Did you change the oil in the air cleaner? Also if you have dead ended the touch control against something it'll be continuously making pressure and will put an extra load on the engine. Sam

Were you doing the same jobs as you were doing last year? 3rd will not handle much of a load. 4th is mostly for unloaded or light load conditions. If it is running smooth, no miss or hesitation, I doubt if there's anything wrong. Lack of power due to engine wear generally comes on gradually.

Although a plug check should have shown it, it might be worth checking for a missing cylinder using the old pull each plug wire and see if it slows down technique. This will lead you to a stuck valve or misfiring plug, etc.

Thanks for posting that 9 megabyte picture, I"m sure we wouldn"t have known what tractor you were talking about had you not done that.

Here is something for you to chew on:

My SA ran perfectly..fired right up, idled smoothly, everything seemed in order. But, it got so it would pull a sick harlot off the pot.

I gave it a complete tune up..new Autolite plugs, points&condenser, rotor button and cap. It surely gained 5 horsepower..and while that don"t sound like much...it"s a bunch when you only have around 18-20 to begin with.

I have found these old low compression engines will run on anything called gasoline..stale or otherwise, but fresh gas doesn"t hurt.

Put in new ignition parts and I"d say you"ll be well pleased with the results. Most of us hicks out in the country don"t have the option of DSL and those glorious pictures take forever to load.

My 140's run great, but 4th gear is for highway only, and they bog down for the few seconds it takes them to get up to speed. I can't imagine putting on any kind of load in 4th. If they labor under load in 3rd, I go to 2nd or even 1st. Not sure what you're doing but nothing you've said sounds problamatic.
