Muffler, To Paint or not to Paint

I received my new SH muffler today. It is "aluminized" which appears to be some sort of sprayed on coating. I say this because the top of the body and the upper stack look like they were not covered very well (spattered). This is a Stanley muffler and is billed as the authentic reproduction of the original. Do I need to paint this thing with a high heat silver or???

If you don"t mind "black" bar-baque paint is the best. Not high heat engine paint but bar-baque paint from the hard ware.

We paint all the pipes on our snowmobiles with it and it never comes off and protects for years.

I did see the other day at Home Depot that they had it in other colors ! Don"t know how it works , but the black is great. I have even painted the exhaust manifold on my Super M with it and it still is perfect.

I just painted my Stanley muffler for my 300 with engine paint. BAD IDEA!! It all flew off so I am gonna put some exhaust manifold paint on it. I know that won't come off. Had it on my old Chevy for over a year and it never came off or discolored! And you can buy it in silver. You can buy it at you local auto parts store in an aerosol can! It's good for 1,300-2,000 degrees F. The stuff I bought isn't real shiny. The can I have says they have a high heat clear coat also if you want it super shiny!! As far as painting a new muffler my experience with them is this: The aluminized paint they use tends to burn pretty easy and turns a brown color that is why I painted my new one! Just make sure you scuff it alittle with a red scotch brite pad to make the paint adhere to the muffler! Good Luck!!

I bought a new muffler for my 504. It was painted? "silver/gray". It soon burnt off and flash rusted. I bought some paint from an Ace store that is hi-temp silver. It requires heat to cure fully. Good for like 1600 F.

The best thing you could do is poke out the baffle in the center of the pipe so the exhaust goes straight out. Have mufflers on AC, IH, Ollie and no matter what paint we use the bottom half ALWAYS burn/flakes off.

ive had a heck of a time keeping a silver on muflers. Ive tryed manifold paint and it was fine till you warmed the tractor and then let it cool then the paint flew off in sheets. I then tryed regular paint, it stayed on but never harded and came off when you touched it.

You can use the hi-temp stuff and it will work. Come have different shades that will give a nicer finish than others. Wont hurt to sand it first to get a better bond.

I just let the paint burn off and the pipe rust, but hey, I work my tractor. if nothing else, use two mufflers, one for shows and one for work.
