My 450D TA is a little hard to start, and runs rough on the gas side. The diesel side could not run better, no smoke except for a little black haze under full load. Seems to need a carb rebuild. Any advice?
Also, I think there is a trough missing from under the carb that should divert gas way from the distributor if it gets flooded. Any ideas?
Thanks, Bob

How are the points & condenser--plug wires--distributor cap--rotor--ignition system in general?? Is she timed to spec? If no ignition faults, I'd look into either fuel delivery or the butterflies which close in gas starting mode. Has the tractor been sitting with old fuel in the carb? Could be gummed up in the fuel passages.

You have to remember that the distributor turns counter clockwise so you have to put the plug wires on the cap backwards. I had a SMD years ago, rebuilt everything and pulled all the plug wires off also. Went to put them back on and wired it 1-3-4-2 clockwise. Worked all day trying to get it to start on gas. Went to an old IH dealer, around 1975 told them all about it and what I did. Went back home put the wires on the other direction and it fired right up

Larry, Now that will make you mad!

There is a trough under the carb. It is not a big deal if it is missing. It is a big deal if you want to buy one. They got lost easily and are a little pricy. Here is the link to the OEM Tractor Parts product https://secure.oemtractorparts.net/store/pc/viewPrd.asp?idproduct=445&idcategory=18
I don't run one on my MD and I have gotten by.

As for poor running. I just took mine apart and shot everything out with carb cleaner and it was good to go. It had sat for ten years before I got it started. IIRC the gaskets weren't the easiest to find back then. It seems like there are a lot more parts for MDs/450d' now days. I haven't priced many parts for mine though bc it needs the top end rebuilt and rebuilt injectors.
