Generator not charging

How can I test my 140 generator? It is a 6v.

Can I connect it to the battery and make it run like a motor? If it runs is it okay?

Here is the simple first test.
With it not running, and a charged battery and all wires connected, Jump between the Bat terminal and Gen terminals on the regulator. This polarizes the generator. It should be done with a piece of solid copper insulated wire 12 ga or 10 ga. (ends bare)
There should be a nice fat spark. Hold for no more than one second.

Start it and run at 1/2 throttle or more. It might be fixed. If not.

With it still running fast as above, jump the F terminal on the generator (smaller post) to a good ground. It will not spark much, but it should charge. If it does, try grounding the frame of the regulator to the chassis and see if that fixes it. If not, it may need a regulator.
Look several posts down the page (maybe 2) and find John T Charging system analysis post He has one fine set of procedures. JimN

QUESTION

Can I connect it to the battery and make it run like a motor?

YES A DC motor and Generator are basically the same thing, put voltage in and it spins, spin it and it puts voltage out......

QUESTION

If it runs is it okay?

MAYBE, if it passes BOTH Motor tests it should charge.

MOTOR TEST: You can Motor test the Gen. If its grounded and you remove the belt and apply hot battery voltage direct to its ARM Post and have the Field Post also dead grounded to frame, it should motor n run well (Armature n Brushes and Commutator likely okay). Then, if you next remove the Fields ground and it speeds up some, the Fields probably good. If it passes both those tests, it should charge, and if not, it may be a wiring or battery or grounding problem. The hot battery voltage may be taken off the VR"s BAT terminal or the starter post or the battery itself for this test.

Heres my Troubleshooting Procedure Jim mentioned

Thanks for the replies on my post.

I did try the "motor" test. The generator would not run. It appears the brushes are bad among other problems.

When I took it by the local dealer in IH parts, he suggested rebuilding it. He tested it as well.

It is 46 years old - it doesn't owe me anything. I will be glad to keep the original part.
