i just bought a 53 super m that didn"t charge. i cleaned the contacts in the vr and now it charges at 20a wide open but discharges at an idle. is there any adjustment on it or is that how they are?

Depending on the load,,,,,,,the RPM,,,,,,condition of genny,,,,,,,,,condition of battery,,,,,,,,,belt tension etc etc

YES it can easily be the case where theres a small discharge at low RPM, ESPECIALLY if youre using an old 6 volt system on an 8 volt battery, heck, be glad she charges at all cuz youre pushing the envelope a bit ya know.

If she charges and keeps the battery up I wouldnt be all that concerned if theres a discharge at low RPM.

YES its possible to perform some minor VR adjustments to tweak it buttttttttt again I wouldnt mess with it for now.

Once you remove the shiny silvery coating off VR contacts they may start sticking so use caution when filing or sanding etc etc

the gen was rebuilt about 5 years ago according to the previous owner, and it looks like it was. it's stamped 8v on it so i'm assuming its 8 volt. belt is tight, but it's adjusted all the way out on the outside of the pully, which now makes me wonder if that would make it turn too slow. batt seems ok, its 3 years old but seems to hold a charge and turns it over ok. i wouldn't worry about it if i worked it more, but it spends alot of time just above an idle.

Buy a few shorter belts with the right to return the unused ones. Put one on that takes the pulley about as small (wide) as it can work with the belt not running on the bottom of the pulley. It will work much better. JimN

Jim, I had to read your post several time before I got it.(I am reading it BC- Before Coffee)
I think you are advicing to use a narrower belt that rides lower in the pulley which will make the gen turn at higher RPM. Correct?

I think that the tractor has an adjustable pulley with adjustment made by turning 1/2 of the flange outward on threads. This allows a smaller belt to be used on the same pulley with a resulting smaller effective diameter. JimN
