404 hydraulic lift

I bought an international 404 and at first the 3 pt would go down no problem but took 15 minutes before it would go back up. I changed the fluid and took lift unit out and cleaned all out. It was full of sludge. Now it will go up when I crank up the throttle real fast. Please help.

If you changed the fluid I will assume you changed the filter. Try holding the aux valve on demand while raising the hitch. If the speed of hitch changes you have a problem with the unloading valve inside the draft control valve assembly.

I guess I was assuming again that you have aux valves on your tractor, they are the control for the rear hydraulic outlets, you may not have any but would guess you do. Should be one or two levers by console.

Bob: I don't have this but did see it once, IH Blue Ribbon Service manual for hydraulics of a 404. An excellent very well detailed trouble shooting section on that 3 point hitch. It was somewhere between 6 and 9 pages, covers just about any problem one could imagine.

At the time hydraulics of that type were new to IH. Also up to that time IH had not done a great job on automatic draft control, however they did get it right on 04-06 tractors. Back in the late 60s an independant Ag Engineer told me that draft control hitch was the most sophisticated hydraulics on any tractor built. I've never had much experience with 04, however I can tell you as of 2008 NO ONE has come up with a better draft controlled hitch than series 06, 56, etc.

If I owned a 404, I'd be looking for a copy of that manual.

It does not have hydraulic outlets or aux valves. I was just looking at the manual and realized when I had the control valve assembly out and cleaning it up I missed the flow control valve. I think this weekend I will pull it back out and check it.

Bob: Should be what you need, I've had those for most of my tractors over the years. They do a good job on that hitch.
