IH Cub (red v. yellow)

I was just thinking about something and thought maybe one of you guys can enlighten me about something. I see a red cub in the photoads with a s/n 251,xxx. I have one that is 248,xxx. My question is, is there much difference in these mechanically (from the factory) other than paint?

I have seen a 1950 cub painted white, just because their number fell in the range for a demo, but with no evidence that it was a true demo. I was wondering why a guy can"t paint a yellow/white cub red, and then sell it for high dollar? I am NOT saying anything about that particular tractor..but I was just wondering what the differences are...maybe the carb? The head/pistons? I know these red IH cubs were the later ones, but I wonder what makes them different other than paint?

Cubs could almost always be ordered either red or yellow. At any point in time, the only difference was the paint. I don't think there is any big price premium of one color over the other.

Your cub must be about the same as mine and its a 1975 yellow and white. Now i understand the only ones painted red were in 1979 and those were the very last ones made. Now you could paint yours red but the serial numbers wouldnt match the last ones made. So you wouldnt get the big bucks for it.

Legend has it that IH switched back to red in 1979 because it was the last year for the "Farmall" Cub. However, I know of one 1977 model that is original factory red, and have seen several others in the 1975-1979 era that claim to be red from the factory with original paint jobs.

Apparently IH was painting a few Cubs red here and there during the later years.

Hello,
I am buying a 67 and it is yellow and white,
Wengers add in the Lancaster Farming has one
said to be a 67 low boy and it is red????
Mine looks just like it . I was thinking Low Boys were made differently?
were the later ones low boys ?????
thanks

The red one is almost certainly painted if it's a 67. IH may have cranked out a few red ones by special request, but just like the white demos and gold demos, they probably didn't keep track. Odds are that it's been painted, though.

The first Cub Loboys were mechanically the same as a Farmall Cub, with two exceptions:

1. The final drives were rotated forward 90 degrees to lower the tractor by 8".
2. The front spindles were shortened by 8" to keep the tractor level.

They went like that until the late '60s and then brought out the center-drive Loboy model 154. It looks like a giant Cub Cadet lawn mower. Has a cub engine transmission and final drives, but also has live PTO and creeper gear option. Next was the improved 185, another giant Cub Cadet, and then the 184 which was styled to look like the '84 series tractors.

IN THE LATER YEARS THE CUB CADET DEALERS WOULD GET YELLOW TRACTORS (CADETS 7 CUBS) THE AG DEALERS GOT RED THEATORS (FARM & CUBS)
