I have a 3588 on the flat the park engages fine but with any sort of resistance against it (Like on a hill) the pawl will not hold it just sounds like a rachet (pawl in and out of teeth). I have the top plate off and the gear looks good no missing teeth and the pawl looks a little rounded at the bottom point but notheing major. Is it just a linkage problem? I tried to ajust the linkage so the pawl shaft would go as low as it could into the housing but when I did that the over center piece didn't come back far enough when I took the park lever out of park to neutral.
I hope this makes some sort of sence to someone. HELP

A 3588 should have the spring loaded park lock not a over center one . Now ya may want to look into this as on the 88 series i am not the expert. But i am sure that after the 66 series they went with the spring loaded from the over center and when i have to pull the range cove off even a 706 it gets changed to the spring loaded one .

The pawl is spring loaded I call the linkage on top of the speed transmission over center linkage it may not be called that

As long as the linkage isn't bent or wore the other thing I'd check is if that triangle overcenter piece is on the right way. Out is molded into one side of this part. Make sure that faces away from the trans.
