steel wheel lug rims

Just got done painting my 10-20 and would like to put rims over the lugs on the rear steel wheels. I'm wondering what others have used for the steel for this. Would 3/16 x 4" be heavy enough or should I go with 1/4"? Also have any of you tried cutting the tread off of old rubber tires and putting that over the lugs? Hate to spend a lot of time doing that and then find out the rubber doesn't hold up or something. Or, is there a better way altogether. Thanks for your help again.

hi what year 10-20 any pics i am doing A 1924 MCCORMIK DEERING AND I JUST BOUGHT NEW FRONT STEEL WHEELS AND I TO WAS THINKING WHAT TO PUT ON THEM ON THE FRONT WHEELS I THOUGHT I WOULD BUY A HORSE STALL MAT AND BOULT IT ON AND MY BACK WHEELS HAVE THE SHARP LUGS AND I THINK THEY WOULD CUT THROW ANY RUBER BUT MAYBE YOU COULD PUT A SMALL PLATE OF STEEL OVER THE LUG THEN THE RUBER

Even 3/8 will bend to junk in a short time unless made fron expensive alloy steel. 1/2 inch is OK. Search the Archives for Steel Wheel Bands. JimN
