Leaking Fuel Out of Gas Cap

1941 Farmall A.
Have original gas cap.
Just put on a new gasket (rubber).
Fuel comes out periodically.
Today, sitting still...fuel "bubbling out" slowly.
Venting problem?
Hate to paint tank before problem fixed.

Get the tall cap. Sorry there is no cure. Vapor pressure of todays fuel is substantially higher than days of old. the flanges on the tank can be a problem, there is a tool to fix them. Search the archives. The original short caps leaked from day one and periodically shot a streem of fuel into the air. Avoid filling closer than 2 inches from the neck, and get the tall cap. JimN

I agree. With the old style cap I had fuel leakage if the tank was above 1/2. I liked the look of the lower profile cap but didnt feel like torching the newly restored girl anytime soon. No leaks at all with the tall cap.

Apparently some people have been burned, along with some tractors, by the fuel leaking/squirting out the low fuel caps. That's why even to this day Navistar (IH's old truck division) is giving away the free gas caps.

My SM filler neck is goobered up, someone gave me a tank with a good neck. Only trouble is I'll lose my gas guage. When the gas stops seeping out under the cap it's time to go get a can.
